The plot is really all but too familiar: wife miscarries, becomes depressed, husband convinces wife to adopt, they choose a child, and then BAM! said child becomes an evil, killing machine. This is what you can expect when sitting down to watch Orphan, which is very similar to movies like The Good Son and The Omen. I was really expecting more scary scenes, but the movie really left little to be scared about. There were typical scary movie moment opportunities that really left its viewers disappointed, because they failed to deliver.
Interesting enough, in the credits you will notice Leonardo
DiCaprio is listed as a producer. I mean come on, if you were making a horror movie, would you really recruit the guy who starred in Titanic, one of the sappiest love stories ever made, as a producer? I mean, honestly, how scary could it actually be? I’m confused because movie critics are torn on ratings. Moviefone.com gave it 3 stars, and Roger Ebert gave it 5 stars. Really? 5 stars? I can’t help but feeling a little let down. I actually said during the movie “Wow, people are going to really think twice for awhile on adopting a child!” So when I got home I did some research and there are actually Human Rights activitists protesting this movie, saying it has given a lot of negative attitudes towards adoption and orphans. Is it just me or is this JUST A MOVIE?!
Anyway, after seeing Orphan, I really feel like I should have just waited for it to be released to the RedBox instead of wasting my money and my time; 123 very long minutes to be exact. Really, 2 hours of the same old song and dance of the evil child pretending to be sweet and innocent. Since I’m feeling generous this evening, I give Orphan 2.5 stars.
